Dear, Mr. Prime Minister!

My name is Ilya, I am 29 years old, I was born to a family of a Ukrainian army officer, Ukrainian by nationality, and a teacher of Jewish tradition and history. My wife is originally from Belarus and moved to Ukraine on the darkest day of the Revolution of Dignity, our firstborn - Grisha, is 4 y.o. We named our son to honour my grandfather, the head of the Jewish community of my hometown, Grigory Izrailevich Aizenshtat.

My grandfather stood at the origins of the revival of Jewish life in our region of Ukraine. He was one of the most prominent ambassadors of Jewry in the Ukraine’s northeast. Not only an Orthodox cross but also Magen David and a Muslim crescent are present on the flag of my hometown - Konotop (Sumy region). Ukrainians, Jews, Tatars, Russians, and others lived together in our city for hundreds of years. The house where my ancestors have lived was called Palestine because a lot of Jews lived there. However, everyone there, regardless of nationality, spoke Yiddish Ukrainian and Russian.

In the early 1990s, with the fall of the Soviet Union and Ukraine gaining its independence, Jewish life began to revive in our city. Our community has become vibrant and active again, it wasn’t a coincidence that even Shalom Aleichem wrote about the famous Konotop klezmers. Our community was visited by outstanding people of the Jewish world: genealogists, historians, Yiddish experts, famous rabbis, and activists of Jewish communities from all over the world.

From the age of 16, I have visited Israel almost every half a year, representing the Ukrainian Jewish youth at various forums, conferences, and seminars. Together with Israeli peers, we dreamed, created, philosophised about Jewish values and Zionism. For more than eight years, my wife worked as the head of the educational programs for the Jewish Agency for Israel in the Republic of Belarus. She taught more than one generation of Jewish leaders. When talking to our chamichim (students) in summer camps and youth Jewish clubs, we have always described Israel as the only state that is a sole protector of Jews around the world. The Knesset passed a law confirming this on July 19th, 2018. This constitutional act declares the nature of the State of Israel as the national state of the Jewish people and that the state undertakes it to take care of the welfare of Jews and Israelis "in trouble abroad."

“Israel is the most humane state in the world, Israel does not abandon its people, Israel is a friend of Ukraine” - a mantra that I have repeated in dialogues with my Ukrainian friends. After all, whatever one may say, it is the Jewish community of Ukraine that is the biggest lobbyist and ambassador of Israel to Ukraine. Not diplomats, but local Jews: teachers, businessmen, salesmen, scientists, pensioners - all of us, in our stories about the Jewish state, built the image of this country in the eyes of Ukrainians for decades. That is why the people of Kyiv proudly say “our Golda Meir”, the people of Vinnytsia remember Levi Eshkol, and in Kherson, they do not forget about Moshe Sharet. Thanks to our efforts and our friends in Israel, hundreds of Israeli entrepreneurs came to Ukraine. It was us who did it.

38 days ago, the "Yom Kippur War" began for Ukraine. Vilely, without a declaration of war, war came to our homes.

For 38 days in a row, Ukrainians have been dying from cluster shells, multiple rocket launchers, and thermobaric shells.

38 days ago our life was destroyed. When I say “our” I mean the lives of Ukrainian citizens: Jews, Ukrainians, Russians, Tatars, Ruthenians, Bulgarians, Greeks, all those who live in our multinational tolerant country.

For 38 days, you, as the leader of the Jewish state, are silent.

For 38 days your government ministers have been shifting the responsibility from one to another. 

For 38 days, representatives of the diplomatic corps of Israel haven't appeared on the territory of Ukrainian cities.

For 38 days, your ministers are imitating assistance in social media with no real involvement.

For 38 days Ukrainian refugees in Ben Gurion Airport are treated as Jews in the infamous Polish city.

For 38 days, your hotline phones are silent, giving out only short and long beeps.

For 38 days, our volunteers and friends in Israel have been collecting humanitarian       aid and sending tons of it directly to Ukraine, unlike the government -  to Moldova

On the 38th day of war, your Foreign Ministry cowardly "denies" the ambassador's statements about war crimes committed by the Russian army in the Kyiv suburbs. And only late in the evening they decide to make a statement.

On the 38th day, 410 bodies of civilians with clear signs of torture and execution were found. How is this different from the Babi Yar massacre? No need to answer, I'll tell you, the only difference is in the uniform the murderer is wearing and the language he is speaking. Holocaust does not belong to Israel - it is a global tragedy. The land of Ukraine is covered in the blood of our ancestors, so we, the Jews of Ukraine, are asking you:  why do you keep silent?

Mr. Prime Minister,

I have never asked anything from Israel, on the contrary, I was willing to give led by Hillel’s words “if I am only for myself, then who am I?”

I haven’t asked anything from Israel when together with friends we gathered people to join rallies in support of Israel during every military operation; neither did i ask when we helped the Israelis who were in trouble in Ukraine; nor when I cleaned up the garbage and distributed food around the Tel Aviv bus station neighbourhood to help African refugees sheltered by Israel; I also haven’t asked for anything from Israel when I helped representatives of our Foreign Ministry to work out the policy of interaction with Israel within the framework of the UN and UNESCO.

We did all of this for the sake of our countries, for our two homelands to be true friends, not just formal ones.

We, the Jews of Ukraine, see the help of the civil society of the State of Israel to the Ukrainians. We are infinitely grateful for this aid and will remember this friendly hand for hundreds of years to come. When I say "Ukrainians" - I mean the entire Ukrainian political nation, Ukrainians, Russians, Jews, Tatars, and others living on the same territory and united by one idea and dreams for ​​the development of our country.

Nevertheless, we, the Jews of Ukraine, also see the problems, which partially led to the Israeli society and the Politikum to react ambiguously to the war in Ukraine. There are two of them, and both are fundamental:

№1 The problem of the education system. The image of Ukraine is being solely built based on stories about Bohdan Khmelnytsky, pogroms, and other dark pages of our Ukrainian-Jewish history. I doubt that the same approach is used when teaching history of England, France and Spain e.g. in Israeli schools. At the same time, it is being forgotten that Ukraine is the Motherland of Hasidism, home to outstanding Jewish writers, poets, and politicians. The first written mention of Kyiv was made in Hebrew here, Baal Shem Tov smoked a pipe with Oleksa Dovbush, and the only currency in the world with a Yiddish text was also found here. Let's learn the whole palette of the relationship, and not just the dark part of it. Give Israeli students the opportunity to understand the history and role of Jews in Ukraine not based on Russian/Soviet narratives, but based on real ones. Meanwhile, when studying history, teachers should not forget about the present, and the understanding of what is happening now, and how the modern multicultural Ukrainian society lives.

№2 The problem of the system of values ​​that you have been building for decades through honoring the Righteous Among the Nations, through creating of the museum and the institute for the study of the Holocaust Yad Vashem, and identifying the principles of humanity in society based on that. How can a state and a society created by people who witnessed and survived the Holocaust, generations brought up on leardning the lessons of the Shoah and have been saying "Never again", can stand aside from the repetition of history? Why and where did the value system, so carefully crafted by the State of Israel, has failed?  

Once, an outstanding Kyiv resident Golda Meir said, “If Israel stops shooting, then there will be no Israel, if our neighbours stop shooting, there will be peace.”

Mr. Bennett, replace Israel with Ukraine, that's the whole point of what is happening in Ukraine now in 2022. Not in 1948, not in 1956, not in 1973, not in 1982, and not even in 2006.

Don't be silent, Mr. Bennett, don't the Jews of Ukraine deserve the Prime Minister of the Jewish State to take the side of the truth?

I know you're afraid that without Russia, Syria and Iran will play by different rules. But Russia never plays by the rules, it messes around with rules.

Mr. Bennett, I know you are afraid for the lives of the 200,000 Jews in Russia, and what will happen to them in case you support Ukraine. However, Mr. Bennett, 200,000 Jews in Ukraine are already being killed right now. Russian Grad missiles, the same ones that were hitting Israeli cities not so long ago, destroyed the Jewish youth centre in Kharkiv. Russian Iskander missiles that are used to protect the Assad regime in Syria are falling near the grave of Rabbi Nachman in Uman and Babi Yar.

Mr. Bennett, I know you are a religious person, but do you believe in G-d?

אדוני היקר, ראש הממשלה.

שמי איליה, אני בן 29, נולדתי במשפחה של קצין צבא אוקריאיני, ומורה למסורת והיסטוריה יהודית. 
אישתי במקור מבלארוס ועברה לאוקראינה ביום האפל ביותר של מהפכת הכבוד.
הבכור שלנו, גרישה, הוא בן 4. קראנו לבננו לכבוד סבי, ראש החברה היהודית בעיר הולדתי, גריגורי איזריילביץ' אייזנשטאט.
סבי, עמד במקורות תחיית החיים היהודיים באזורנו באוקראינה. הוא היה אחד השגרירים הבולטים של היהדות בצפון מזרח אוקראינה. לא רק צלב אותודקוסי, אלא גם מגן דוד וסהר מוסלמי נמצא על דגל עיר הולדתי – קונוטופ (אזור סומי). מאות שנים חיו יחד בעירנו אוקראינים, יהודים, טטרים, רוסים ואחרים. הבית שבו גרו אבותיי נקרא פלסטין כי גרו בו הרבה יהודים. עם זאת, כולם דיברו שם יידיש, ללא הבדל לאום, כמו גם אוקראינית ורוסית. 

בראשית שנות ה-90, עם קבלת עצמאות אוקראינה, החלו החיים היהודיים להתחדש בעירנו. הקהילה שלנו הפכה שוב לתוססת ופעילה, אז לא בכדי כתב פעם אפילו שלום עליכם על הכליזמרים המפורסמים של קונוטופ. בקהילה שלנו ביקרו מצטיינים מהעולם היהודי: גנאלוגים, היסטוריונים, מומחי יידיש, רבנים מפורסמים ופעילים של קהילות יהודיות מכל העולם.

מגיל 16 ביקרתי בישראל כמעט כל חצי שנה, וייצגתי את הנוער היהודי האוקראיני בפורומים, כנסים וסמינרים שונים. ביחד עם עמיתים ישראלים חלמנו, יצרנו, התפלספנו על ערכים יהודיים וציונות. במשך יותר משמונה שנים, אשתי עמדה בראש התוכניות החינוכיות של הסוכנות היהודית לישראל ברפובליקה של בלארוס. היא לימדה מספר דורות של מנהיגים יהודיים. תמיד דיברנו על ישראל כמדינה שהיא המגינה היחידה של כל יהודי העולם לחניכים שלנו במחנות קיץ ובמועדונים יהודיים לנוער. הכנסת העבירה חוק המאשר זאת ב-19 ביולי 2018. חוק חוקתי זה מכריז על אופייה של מדינת ישראל כמדינה הלאומית של העם היהודי והמדינה מתחייבת לדאוג לרווחתם של יהודים וישראלים "במצוקה בחו"ל ."

"ישראל היא המדינה ההומנית ביותר בעולם, ישראל לא נוטשת את תושביה, ישראל היא ידידה של אוקראינה" - מנטרה שחזרתי עליה בדיאלוגים עם חבריי האוקראינים. אחרי הכל, מה שיגידו, הקהילה היהודית באוקראינה היא הלוביסט והשגריר הגדול ביותר של ישראל באוקראינה. לא דיפלומטים, אלא יהודים מקומיים: מורים, אנשי עסקים, אנשי מכירות, מדענים, פנסיונרים - כולנו, בסיפורינו על מדינת היהודים, בנינו את דמותה של המדינה הזו בעיני האוקראינים במשך עשרות שנים. לכן בני קייב אומרים בגאווה "גולדה מאיר שלנו", בני ויניציה זוכרים את לוי אשכול ובחרסון לא שוכחים את משה שרת. הודות למאמצים שלנו ולחברינו בישראל, מאות יזמים ישראלים הגיעו לאוקראינה. זה אנחנו שעשינו את זה.

לפני 38 ימים החלה "מלחמת יום הכיפורים" באוקראינה. במרושע, ללא הכרזת מלחמה, הגיעה המלחמה לבתינו.

במשך 38 ימים ברציפות, האוקראינים מתים מפגזי מקבץ, משגרי רקטות מרובים ומפגזים תרמובריים.

לפני 38 ימים נהרסו חיינו. חייהם של אזרחים אוקראינים: יהודים, רוסים, טטרים, רותנים,בולגרים, יוונים כל אלה שחיים בארצנו הרב- לאומית הסובלנית. 
במשך 38 אתה כמנהיג מדינת היהודים שותק.

38 ימים שרי הממשלה שלך מעבירים אחריות זה מזה.

במשך 38 ימים לא הופיעו נציגי החיל הדיפלומטי של ישראל בשטח הערים האוקראיניות.

במשך 38 ימים, השרים שלכם מחקים סיוע ברשתות החברתיות ללא מעורבות אמיתית.

במשך 38 ימים מתייחסים לפליטים אוקראינים בנמל התעופה בן גוריון כיהודים בעיר הפולנית הידועה לשמצה.

במשך 38 ימים, הטלפונים של הקו החם שלך שותקים בצפצופים קצרים וארוכים.

כבר 38 ימים, המתנדבים והחברים שלנו בישראל אוספים סיוע ושולחים טונות ממנו לאוקראינה, ולא כממשלה למולדובה.

 

ביום ה-38 למלחמה, משרד החוץ שלכם "מכחיש" בפחדנות את הצהרות השגריר על פשעי מלחמה שביצע הצבא הרוסי בפרברי קייב. ורק בשעת ערב מאוחרת החליטו להצהיר משהו.

ביום ה-38 נמצאו 410 גופות של אזרחים עם סימני עינויים והוצאה להורג. במה זה שונה מטבח באבי יא? אין צורך לענות, אני אגיד לך, המדים והשפה של הכובש, כאן מסתיימים ההבדלים. השואה לא שייכת רק לישראל - היא טרגדיה עולמית, ואנחנו, יהודי אוקראינה, דם אבותינו, שבו זרועה ארץ אוקראינה, שואלים מדוע אתם שותקים?

אדוני ראש הממשלה,

מעולם לא ביקשתי מישראל דבר ותמיד הייתי מוכן לתת, כי אם אני רק לעצמי, אז מי אני, אמר פעם הלל?

גם לא כשאנחנו, יחד עם חברים, אוספים אנשים לעצרות תמיכה בישראל בכל מבצע צבאי; וגם לא מתי שהיה צריך לעזור לישראלים שהיו בצרות באוקראינה; וגם לא כשניקיתי את האשפה וחילקתי אוכל ברחבי שכונת תחנת האוטובוסים בתל אביב לפליטים אפריקאים שחוננו על ידי ישראל; וגם לא כשעזרתי לנציגי משרד החוץ שלנו לגבש את מדיניות האינטראקציה עם ישראל במסגרת האו"ם ואונסקו.

עשינו את כל זה למען מדינותינו, למען ששתי ארצותינו היו ידידי אמת, לא מצבים.

אנו, יהודי אוקראינה, רואים את עזרתה של החברה האזרחית של מדינת ישראל לאוקראינים. אנו אסירי תודה על כך והזיכרון על כך יחיה מאות שנים בתולדות ארצנו. כשאני אומר "אוקראינים" - אני מתכוון לכלל  האומה הפוליטית האוקראינית, אוקראינים, רוסים, יהודים, טטרים ואחרים שחיים באותו שטח ומאוחדים ברעיון אחד של התפתחות ארצנו.

אף על פי כן, אנו, יהודי אוקראינה, רואים גם את הבעיות, שהובילו את חלקה של החברה הישראלית והפוליטיקום להגיב בצורה מעורפלת למלחמה באוקראינה. יש שניים מהם, ושניהם בסיסיים:

.1 בעיית מערכת החינוך, שבתוכה נוצרת דמותה של אוקראינה על בסיס סיפורים על בוהדן חמלניצקי, פוגרומים ודפים אפלים אחרים בהיסטוריה האוקראינית-יהודית שלנו. אני בספק אם אותה גישה משמשת בלימוד ההיסטוריה של אנגליה, צרפת וספרד, למשל. יחד עם זאת כולם שוכחים שאוקראינה היא מולדת החסידות, סופרים ומשוררים יהודים מצטיינים ופוליטיקאים. כאן, האזכור הראשון בכתב של קייב נעשה בעברית, הבעל שם טוב עישן מקטרת עם אולכסה דובבוש, המטבע היחיד בעולם עם טקסט ביידיש היה כאן גם. בואו נלמד את כל פלטת מערכות היחסים, ולא נישאר על שחור. תנו לתלמידים ישראלים את ההזדמנות להבין את ההיסטוריה והתפקיד של היהודים באוקראינה לא מתוך נרטיבים רוסיים/סובייטיים, אלא מתוך נרטיבים אמיתיים. בזמן לימודי היסטוריה, כל תלמיד לא צריך לשכוח את ההווה, מה שקורה עכשיו, וכיצד חיה החברה האוקראינית הרב-תרבותית המודרנית.

2. בעיית מערכת הערכים שבניתם במשך עשרות שנים באמצעות כיבוד חסידי אומות העולם, באמצעות הקמת המוזיאון והמכון לחקר השואה יד ושם, וגיבוש עקרונות האנושות בחברה. על בסיס זה. כיצד יכולה מדינה וחברה שנוצרה על ידי אנשים שראו ושרדו את השואה, על ידי דורות שלמדו את לקחי השואה ואמרו "לעולם לא עוד", לעמוד בצד מהחזרה על ההיסטוריה? מדוע והיכן נכשלה מערכת הערכים, שנבנתה בקפידה ובקפידה כה רבה במדינת ישראל?

פעם אחת אמרה תושבת קייב מצטיינת גולדה מאיר, "אם ישראל תפסיק לירות, אז לא תהיה ישראל, אם השכנים שלנו יפסיקו לירות, יהיה שלום".
