Thank you for your interest and participation on VANK's Global Petitions and on this petition . As of October 19, a total of 2,770 people have participated in this petition. We are sending this 'Victory' mail to inform you this good news that the map depicted Ulleungdo island and Dokdo island wrongly has been rectified on the WHO official web site!
Congrats! The WHO, which included Dokdo and Ulleungdo on the Japanese map and omitted them on the Korean map, rejected Korean's complaints and requests for correction for more than seven months, have finally corrected the errors.
On March 7, 2020, VANK discovered that Dokdo and Ulleungdo were marked on the Japanese map of the WHO site, where the focus of people around the world were concentrated in relation to the COVID-19 infection, and VANK focused on sending requests for correction. At the time, if you clicked 'Korea' in the country information service(country), among the main menus on the WHO site, Dokdo and Ulleungdo were missing from the Korean map, but when you enter the information page for 'Japan', Dokdo and Ulleungdo were marked on the map. If you look at the map, people around the world could recognize Ulleungdo and Dokdo as Japanese territory. WHO, on the other hand, has detailed maps of many of the Japanese islands on the Pacific Ocean.
Most of all, WHO has recently updated the web site with new designs and new information, but still didn't change the wrong Korean map. As WHO discloses the situation of COVID-19 in each country on a daily basis, if the WHO web site's error on Dokdo and Ulleungdo were neglected, it could become a big problem because the information on the WHO web-site is delivered by major broadcasts and media, government agencies, educational institutions, and portal sites from all over the world every single day.
As of October 12, VANK launched campaigns such as sending letters to the WHO who ignored VANK's requests for correction for more than 7 months, participating in Global Petition, and sending maps on English showing Ulleungdo and Dokdo. More than 2,700 people from around the world participated in the Global Petition by VANK for the addition of Dokdo and Ulleungdo on the map of Korea. http://maywespeak.com/who
Two days after VANK launched the campaign, the WHO removed the map from its introduction to Korea and Japan. If you look at the current WHO introduction page to Korea, the map that is missing Ulleungdo and Dokdo was deleted and the Taeguekgi(the national flag of Korea) is posted on the spot. https://www.who.int/republicofkorea/about-us Also, the map was deleted and the Japanese flag is posted on the WHO's introduction page to Japan, which marked Ulleungdo and Dokdo as Japanese territory. https://www.who.int/japan/about-us
Beginning with the deletion of the maps of Korea and Japan, WHO replaced all country-specific maps with their respective national flags in the country information section of all WHO web sites. If the WHO neglected to correct the errors about Dokdo and Ulleungdo, the Japanese government could use it to promote Dokdo to the world as Japanese territory. Therefore, the WHO's correction of errors about Dokdo served as an opportunity to prevent distortion of Japan's history distortion and to inform the world about Korea properly.
VANK will continue to inform Dokdo, the East Sea, and the history of Korea to international organizations which are powerful in spreading and disseminating information.
It is very important to investigate and correct errors related to Dokdo, the East Sea and Korean history. In particular, VANK expects that not only Koreans in Korea, but people living abroad, such as overseas Korean students, international students, overseas residents, foreign correspondents and anyone who are interested in Korea will be reporting to VANK about the errors and participating in this movement. The problem is that the basic information about Korea is incorrect on the U.S. CIA web site and World Factbook published every year by CIA, which emphasizes global credibility and accuracy.
The CIA marked the East Sea as the Sea of Japan alone, and Dokdo as Liancourt Rocks, and Dokdo/Takeshima in the description. Liancourt Rocks is a name that Japan promotes to third countries in order not to recognize Korea’s ownership of Dokdo and is derived from the French Whaling ship which discovered Dokdo in 1849. This is not the only error about Korea on the CIA web site. Even though Ulleungdo’s jurisdiction is on North Gyeongsangbuk-do, the CIA is introducing it’s jurisdiction belongs to Gangwon-do, and it introduces Korean and English as Korea’s official language. Just as the errors of the international organization WHO have been corrected through VANK's various campaigns, we would like to ask you to participate in the petition.

축하해주세요! 일본 지도에는 독도와 울릉도를 포함하고, 한국 지도에는 누락시킨 세계보건기구(WHO)가 한국인들의 항의와 시정 요청을 7개월 넘게 거부하다가 마침내 오류를 시정했습니다.
2020년 3월 7일, 반크는 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19)과 관련해 세계인의 눈과 귀가 집중돼 있는 세계보건기구(WHO) 사이트 일본지도에 독도·울릉도가 표기돼 있는 것을 발견해 집중적인 오류 시정을 촉구했습니다. 당시 WHO 사이트에서 주요 메뉴 중 국가정보 서비스(country)에서 '한국'을 클릭하면 한국 지도에는 독도와 울릉도가 빠져 있지만 '일본' 정보 소개 페이지에 들어가면 지도에 울릉도와 독도가 표기돼 있었습니다. 지도만 보면 세계인들이 울릉도와 독도를 일본 땅으로 인식할 수 있었습니다. 반면에 WHO는 태평양의 많은 일본 부속 섬을 자세히 지도에 반영했습니다.
무엇보다 WHO는 최근 디자인과 새로운 정보를 더해 사이트를 업데이트했는데 여전히 잘못된 한국 관련 지도를 바꾸지 않았습니다. WHO는 매일 각국 코로나19 상황을 공개하고 있으며, 전 세계 주요 방송과 언론, 각국 정부 기관과 교육기관, 포털 사이트가 이 상황을 전달하기에, WHO 사이트의 독도, 울릉도 오류를 방치하면 큰 문제가 되었습니다.
2020년 10월 12일을 기점으로, 이에 반크는 7개월 넘게 반크의 시정 요구를 무시한 WHO를 대상으로 대대적인 항의 서한 보내기, 국제청원 참여하기, 울릉도와 독도가 표기된 영문 지도 보내기 등의 캠페인을 전개했습니다. 반크가 추진한 WHO 울릉도 독도 추가 요구 청원에는 2,700명이 넘는 세계인이 동참했습니다. http://maywespeak.com/who
반크가 대대적인 캠페인을 추진한지 2일 만에 WHO는 한국과 일본 소개하는 부분에서 해당 지도를 삭제했습니다. 현재 세계 보건기구 한국 소개지도를 보면, 울릉도와 독도가 누락된 지도를 삭제하고 그 자리에 태극기가 게시되었습니다. https://www.who.int/republicofkorea/about-us
또한 울릉도와 독도를 일본영토로 표기한 세계 보건기구 일본 소개지도에도 지도를 삭제하고 일본 국기가 게시되었습니다. https://www.who.int/japan/about-us
WHO는 한국과 일본 지도 삭제를 시작으로 WHO 모든 사이트의 국가 정보 부분에 나라별 지도를 다 해당 국가의 국기로 교체했습니다. 만약 WHO 에 울릉도, 독도 오류 시정을 방치했으면 일본정부는 전 세계에 독도를 일본 땅으로 홍보할 때 활용 될 수도 있었습니다. 따라서 이번 WHO 독도 오류 시정을 통해 전 세계에 일본의 역사 왜곡을 막아내고 올바른 한국을 바로 알릴 수 있는 계기가 되었습니다.
반크는 앞으로도 파급력과 정보전파력이 막강한 전 세계 국제기구를 대상으로 독도, 동해, 한국역사를 바로 알려나갈 것입니다.

세계적인 공신력과 정확성을 강조하는 미국중앙정보국(CIA)의 웹사이트와 매년 발간하는 월드팩트북에서 한국에 대한 기본정보가 잘못되어 있습니다. 반크에서 20년 째 CIA에 시정을 요청하고 있음에도 불구하고 CIA는 오류를 시정하고 있지 않습니다.
CIA는 동해를 일본해로 단독 표기했으며, 독도는 리앙쿠르 록스로 되어 있으며, 설명에는 독도/다케시마로 표기하고 있습니다. 리앙쿠르 록스는 일본이 한국의 독도 소유권을 인정하지 않기 위해 제3국에 홍보하는 이름으로, 1849년 독도를 발견한 프랑스의 포경선 리앙쿠르호에서 따온 말입니다. CIA 웹사이트의 한국오류는 이뿐만이 아닙니다. 울릉도의 관할은 경상북도임에도 CIA는 강원도로 소개하고 있으며, 한국의 언어소개에서 한국어와 영어로 표기하고 있습니다. 국제기구 WHO의 오류가 반크의 여러 캠페인을 통해 시정된 것처럼 여러분들께서도 에 참여하여 주시길 부탁드립니다.
