I hope you all are safe and taking care of yourselves in these unprecedented times. I am deeply distressed and angry by WHO’s recent announcement supporting the re-opening of wildlife markets. Despite the strong evidence that coronavirus originated in a wet market, it is shocking the WHO is taking such a stance.
It is important to shut down the notorious wildlife markets, not only to prevent future pandemics, but to put an end to the intensely cruel and inhumane conditions the animals are subjected to.
The WHO justified its stance by saying that the wildlife markets “are a source of livelihood and food security to many people”. Instead, the global institution must advocate for mechanisms to help those whose livelihoods are based on the wildlife trade to shift to other means of earning their incomes.
