No matter where a dog or cat lives in the world, no animal should suffer from abuse, abandonment or neglect. It is shocking to consider that even now there is no global, intergovernmental recognition of the importance of animal welfare or the need for guidance on animal welfare legislation.
The United Nations has the power to highlight the importance of animal welfare as a socially and economically important goal. A Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare (UDAW) would show the commitment of governments around the world to protecting animal welfare. It would be a vital springboard to changes in international and national animal welfare policies, help strengthen enforcement of animal welfare measures and promote the humane treatment of animals in every corner of the world.
International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is proud to be working with our colleagues in the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and other animal welfare organisations to spearhead this initiative. You can help build an international commitment to strengthen the animal welfare work the IFAW is already doing around the world. A Declaration will help us all advocate for laws that protect animals from cruelty and neglect, provide veterinary training and basic veterinary services, and educate adults and children about responsible and humane treatment of animals.
Animals need our help now. Join IFAW and sign the petition asking governments around the world to support this critical declaration.
I urge you to support a Universal Declaration of Animal Welfare (UDAW) and create a vital springboard to changes in international and national animal welfare policies, help strengthen enforcement of animal welfare measures and promote the humane treatment of animals in every corner of the world.
Now is the time to take action towards a Universal Declaration and help animals around the world. Please lend your government’s support to a UDAW.
