The genocide of the Circassian people, that happened in 1864, is been called the first genocide of the modern era.

After so many years, only Georgia recognized this event as a genocide, asking the Russian government for justice. The number of dead Circassians varies depending on the source, from 400.000 according to the tsarist documents to 1-1.5 million according to the Circassian Cultural Institute.

Today the Circassian Diaspora is the largest in the world, with 86% of all Circassians living out of their homeland.
