Assyrians are the indigenous people of Assyria (known as modern day Iraq), and are one of the earliest civilisations to emerge from Mesopotamia. Their history spans over 6700 years, and they are widely recognised to be the cradle from which all of civilisation evolved. The Assyrian people, due to their unwavering Christian faith, have repeatedly been the targets of fundamentalist Islamic groups, thereby facing multiple genocides, persecution and denial of their basic ethnic, religious, and cultural rights. Today they are facing a real time genocide and colossal ethnic cleansing at the hands of ISIS. There are no governments advocating for or protecting the Assyrian people under current day persecution. The Assyrians of Iraq are being massacred, raped and tortured at the hands of Islamic extremists as we speak. As the original inhabitants and owners of the land of Iraq, they have the right to a protected, independent state in Iraq. A right to safely practice their culture, language, and religious beliefs. A right to be free from the threat of real extinction. The plight of Assyrians today requires swift, precise action. If we don't intervene now, the people of this ancient nation will be extinct.
