Bad news on the horizon: the World Boxing Council has announced that a new weight class named "bridgerweight" is going to be introduced in boxing and millions of fans are already protesting all over the world.

The WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman affirms that the "small heavyweights" are currently penalized by the size of their bigger opponents, but that explanation is senseless: Deontay Wilder, whose weight has been many times lower than the bridgerweight limit, defended the WBC heavyweight title 10 times in recent years! As the great trainer Teddy Atlas brilliantly pointed out on Twitter, the only reason behind this changement is the opportunity to collect more sanctioning fees by the organization. But the consequences could be nefarious. The talented boxers fighting in the heaviest divisions would be split in three different groups: heavy, bridger and cruiser, so the quality fights would become even more sporadic than they are currently.

Anytime a great cruiserweight decides to move to the heavyweight division, it brings huge interest in the audience. It's happening right now with Oleksandr Usyk and Murat Gassiev, it happened few years ago with David Haye. In the future, if such nonsense reform will be established, and expecially if the other boxing organizations will follow the path, there will be more waiting, more dull world titles, more frustration for the fans and more "paper champions".

Who loves this magnificent sport is getting used to many absurds inventions by the four main organizations. Right now we are forced to speak about Interim Champions, Gold Champions, Silver Champions, Franchise Champions, Global Champions, Super Champions and so on. At this rate, one day every boxing gym will have its world champion and the credibility of the sport will be definitely compromised. The introduction of the 18th weight division is just another step towards the abyss, but enough is enough: we need to make our voice count.
