Workers' right are human rights, justice for miss Ocheze Ogbonna.

The Issue

Miss Ocheze Ogbonna was a beautiful young lady that desired to work for a living and earn livelihood. So she choosed to work as employee of Inner Galaxy Steel Company located in Abia State, Nigeria. She never knew she was heading a tragic mission to death out of her decision to work and earn for livelhood like every one would aspire to.

So many abuses and violations happens at workplaces across Nigeria silently and unreported, just because many workers in Nigeria do not know thier rights, nor know how to navigate for justice when their rights are about to or violated, many more do not speak up and only speak up when pushed to extreme end and most times at such point get so late for remedy, resulting into death like the case of Miss Ocheze Ogbonna; which occurred following an altercation and fisticuffs with her Chinese employer, an expatriate in Nigeria making sexual advances to her refusal.

Very many foreign companies and organizations employing Nigerians as employees in Nigeria violates and abuse Nigerians free of charge. Following reports from multiple sources is alleged that Miss Ocheze Ogbonna, a female crane driver and staff of Inner Galaxy Steel Company was pushed off  the crane by her expartriate employer culminating into instant death. Push has come to shove, and this case requires urgent and decisive response from both Abia State Government and the Federal Government under whose laws Inner Galaxy Steel Company was incorporated and registered.

Without debate, workers have rights, employers have rights too. But in this case, is purely a case of determination if employer in any guise have rights to take employee rights? Or whether rights to life in Nigeria is constitutional and fundamental human rights? This case showacse so much impunity if swept under carpet in Nigeria and I do not think we should allow it go under. Workers rights violation in Nigeria is enough, and is time we join voice to stop it.

Be that as it may, to be balanced and fair I ask what will it take to bring a Nigerian under the Chinese laws for killing a citizen of China on Chinese soil? And I answered myself that the Nigerian would have been arrested, investigated and if found wanting, prosecuted. So my question now is, would Nigeria Government hold this Chinese company to account on this allegation? That's why I am writing this petition to bring to notice of the Nigerian Government demanding justice for Miss Ocheze Ogbonna. Please can you help me sign and share this petition now? Inner Galaxy Steel Company can not be above the law.

Regretably from FENRAD, an Abia State based NGO have confirmed and I quote "that this is not the first time Inner Galaxy Steel Company would be in the news for the wrong reasons. In 2020, during the past administration, reports of workers being dehumanised, exploited and abused sexually circulated. But nobody did anything about it. The past administration only sent a 'fact-finding team' to go and 'investigate' the activities of Inner Galaxy Steel Company. Later, a committee was set up whose report has yet to be made public ".

They said according to Punch newspaper of August 14, 2020, a former victim and employee of the Group summed up the inhuman experiences of workers when, through his tweets, he averred: 'Male Nigerian workers are physically assaulted,  while their female counterparts are sexually assaulted without any consequence. Chinese "MASTERS" will use derogatory words on Nigerian employees, and you dare not talk back at them because the consequence is grievous. After the physical assaults you will get, you will still be sacked. Chinese "MASTERS" will boast of killing you and getting away with it.' To me, this is pathetic and must stop. Working is not slavery.

Further they said "more stories have it that workplace victimisation had been shared in the past, on various media platforms, especially how the Group crammed Abians in a 'concentration camp' called hostel, not allowing workers to leave during the COVID-19 era for instance. Even the secuity authourities were allegedly accused of aiding and abetting this crime on Nigerian soil". And that is a sad one. Please sign and share this petition now.

As I write this petition with tears in my eyes as told, "gory details of amputees who lost a limb working in the company who were later dumped are also in the public domain. Currently, sexual harassment is also part of the story of late Ms. Ocheze Ogbonna. It is such a shame that the activities and operations of the Inner Galaxy Steel Group of Company were not investigated thoroughly to enhance justice and possible closure. The result of the government being lackadaisical or lukewarm on this matter could lead the firm to double down on its alleged exploitative mode of operations against indigent citizens".

Previous media reports abound on how the Group exploited Abians and rubbed it in their face as if they are above the laws of Nigeria or parts thereof Nigeria has laws, Abia too does. The meaning is that all legal persons, be they citizens, aliens, corporate bodies, indigenous or foreign, are guided by the laws of Nigeria or any part thereof being where such a firm is located and pay taxes.

By this pettition, I am calling for a thorough investigation on Inner Galaxy Steel Company on the allegation and if found culpable, to be prosecuted as Nigeria is not a banana republic. FULL STOP.

Lastly, my sincere condolence to Miss Ocheze Ogbonna's family, relatives and friends all over the world.

Justice for Miss Ocheze Ogbonna is justice for all. Rest in Perfect Peace.
