Reducing the number of strays that supply the dog and cat meat trade is a critical next step toward ending the trade altogether.
It's a long battle, but we continue to be inspired by success stories like that of the young man and Golden Retriever in the photo at the top of this email.
We like to share the story of Xiao-Yi, the boy in the photo above. He was eight years old and terrified of dogs when we first met him in 2014. So how did he end up in this beautiful photo with GeGe the Golden Retriever? Read about Xiao-Yi's story.
Thanks to our generous supporters, we have organized many animal welfare community outreach events in Yulin, where the infamous dog meat festival is held annually.
These events have given local children, dogs, and cats a valuable opportunity to interact. They have also changed the perspectives of many people about dogs and cats.
Xiao-Yi, a Yulin native, was one of them. Once terrified of dogs, he now says the gentle Golden Retriever made him fall in love with dogs. He also told me that he heard the phrase "dogs are our best friends" for the first time at one of the events he attended.
