Woolworths: Bring Back Our Vegan Options - Work With the Community, Not Against It

The issue

For years, Woolworths has been a go-to for Australians seeking plant-based food. But in the past months, shoppers have watched vegan sections shrink dramatically, shelves merged, staples vanished, and variety reduced to a handful of products.

When asked why, Woolworths responded that plant-based sales had “declined” and waste was “too high.” But that doesn’t reflect what we’re seeing in stores or across vegan communities.

Sales fell after shelves were downsized, ranges cut, and the wrong products chosen, often by buyers who don’t even eat plant-based themselves.

This is not a demand problem , it’s a category management problem.

Woolworths and Coles together hold a national duopoly in grocery retail.

With that power comes a duty of care to provide fair access to food for everyone, including the growing number of Australians choosing plant-based diets for ethical, environmental, or health reasons.

We’re asking Woolworths to:

  1. Publicly clarify the scope and intent of the current plant-based range review.
  2. Restore essential vegan staples (like tofu, tempeh, vegan cheeses, deli slices, and the macro range) to regular shelf availability.
  3. Engage in co-creation with the people who actually eat these products by establishing a Vegan Product Advisory Group of customers, nutrition experts, and sustainability advocates to help guide range decisions and reduce waste.
  4. Communicate transparently with the vegan and plant-curious community about product changes and future commitments.

Australia’s vegan market isn’t going away, it’s growing, evolving, and diversifying. What’s needed now is collaboration, not contraction.

Let’s show Woolworths that inclusivity, sustainability, and customer choice matter.

Sign this petition to tell Woolworths: bring back the vegan options, and start listening to the people who actually buy them.

💚 Why This Matters
Vegan and plant-based eating isn’t a “niche.” It’s part of Australia’s shift toward more ethical, sustainable, and healthy food systems.

When Woolworths quietly cuts these options, it isolates a community of loyal shoppers and sends a message that sustainability only matters when it’s convenient.

This is about more than tofu, it’s about fair access, representation, and responsible leadership from one of Australia’s largest companies.

Together, we can remind Woolworths that progress doesn’t happen by taking options away.
