Bella Giannoni started this petition to Woodrow Wilson High School

The initial thought behind the use of clear backpacks at Woodrow is safety; however, this is merely a facade for what appears to be effective action in a time such as this.
Downsides to requiring clear backpacks are:

  • Their lack of longevity
  • No back support
  • Not improving/stopping safety concerns (weapons, drugs, etc.)
  • Will likely promote the use and purchase of smaller bags to go inside of it (essentially pointless)
  • Because of easy wear and tear, students are likely to buy replacements, which can be a financial burden
  • Would likely increase the rate of stolen items at Woodrow
  • Prevents female students from having an ease of privacy regarding sanitary napkins

As you can see and imagine, the benefits of clear backpacks are essentially nonexistent compared to the detriments. Not only this, but other DISD schools, like Booker T. Washington, do not require the same. So, for the sake of the health, wealth, convenience, and wellbeing of students here at Woodrow, I am creating a student-led petition to reform the safety regulations at school and to allow students to carry sturdy, long-lasting, privacy-protecting, and efficient backpacks. Because be honest- who would carry AP textbooks in what is essentially a ziplock bag?
