Woodman’s: Be transparent about animal welfare!

The Issue

Hi, my name is Rachel, and I live in a suburb of Chicago. I have been buying groceries from Woodman’s, my local grocery store, for years. I want to share why I feel betrayed by Woodman’s and currently refuse to shop there.

In case you aren’t familiar with Woodman’s, Woodman’s is a regional grocery store chain that spans from Northern Wisconsin to the Chicagoland area. Woodman’s grocery stores are unique in that they are massive.

In 2016, Woodman’s publicly committed to transition to 100% cage-free eggs by 2025. I was excited that my favorite grocery store had made this promise, and I felt at ease shopping somewhere that cared about animal welfare.

That is until recently, when I found out that Woodman’s has not only refused to publicly share whether it has made progress towards this commitment, but it also silently removed its commitment from its website. This lack of transparency is a betrayal to customers like myself, and to the animals.

It is important for Woodman’s to follow through on its cage-free egg commitment because thousands and thousands of chickens suffer in its supply chain every day. They are confined in dirty, barren cages so small, they cannot even spread their wings. These chickens live in a space equivalent to the size of a sheet of paper. They are unable to engage in anything natural to them, such as dust bathing, perching, and nesting, which causes mental anguish. Chickens are sentient beings, and they deserve better than to spend their entire lives in a small cage.

Please join me in petitioning Woodman’s to (1) repost its cage-free egg commitment to its website and (2) publicly report progress on its promise to stop supporting the cruel and unnecessary caging of chickens!
