Dear Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Anand,

“The humanitarian suffering in Gaza has reached unimaginable levels,” Foreign Minister Anita Anand said several days ago.

On the same day, former justice minister Irwin Cotler declared that the war on Gaza was a “moral and strategic disaster”.

Many experts declare that the war is tantamount to a genocide. Indeed, one hundred Palestinian children have died from starvation, according to the most recent UNRWA report, and more than 60,000 Palestinian lives have been bombed into dust; an entire civilization---hospitals, schools, museums, libraries, farms, tens of thousands of homes ---has been reduced to rubble.

We, the undersigned, are Toronto Women in Black. Three hundred of us turn out for regular silent vigils in downtown Toronto. We implore you, our government, to take more robust action than a milquetoast promise to recognize a Palestine state --- whatever that might possibly mean or achieve in the midst of a cruel war.

We ask for immediate sanctions against Israel, to force that nation to open the borders to allow United Nations aid to pour into Gaza. Prime Minister Brian Mulroney took similar bold action in imposing sanctions on South Africa, and that was the beginning of the end of apartheid. Can a Liberal government actually do less in the face of a genocide?

Many of our participants are Jews; we reject any implication that protest against this war is anti-Semitic. We fail to understand why western governments are so timid in taking strong action against the war.

We ask that Canada stop sending munitions or weapons parts of any kind to prop up the Israel war machine. It is now blazingly clear that history will regard with moral disgust those countries that were complicit in the attempt to wipe out the Palestinian people.

Respectfully,

Michele Landsberg O.C.
