Deny Isiah Thomas Ownership of WNBA New York Liberty

This petition had 2,397 supporters

In 2007, Basketball Hall of Fame player Isiah Thomas was found guilty of sexual harassment of his colleague Anucha Browne Sanders. A jury found that Mr. Thomas had made crude insults and unwanted advances toward Sanders when he was the coach of the New York Knicks. Before the decision, the team fired Sanders because she spoke out about the harassment. Madison Square Garden (owners of the New York Knicks) was forced to pay $11.5 million in damages for sexual harassment and retaliation.

It is incomprehensible that a man found guilty of sexual harassment -- and who shows no public remorse -- will serve as a leader of a women’s sports team.

The WNBA Board of Governors will soon decide if Thomas can become a part-time team owner. We implore them to show the league’s millions of supporters worldwide that they respect women from their executive suites to their season ticket holders to their youngest fans. Please sign this petition if you call to deny Mr. Thomas' ownership of the New York Liberty.

Nineteen years strong and still growing, the WNBA showcases incredible athletes who stand as role models for millions of girls and boys worldwide. Every day, young girls across the country hone their skills in hopes of one day scoring the winning basket on a college court or in the WNBA Championships. The WNBA’s message to those girls if Mr. Thomas is approved as part-owner of the Liberty is that sexual harassment – inexcusable behavior in any other workplace – is not only tolerated but is instead rewarded at the WNBA.

When Donald Sterling, former owner of the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers, was found making disparaging racial comments, he was banned from professional basketball for the rest of his life. The same rules must apply to sexual misconduct and the WNBA.

Please sign this petition to tell the WNBA Board of Governors that you do not support any decision that gives Mr. Thomas an ownership role in the New York Liberty.
