Return Rob Lorei to WMNF
The Issue
Return Rob Lorei to WMNF
On January 6, 2021, our nation faced one of its darkest days with an incited insurrection that attempted to overthrow our country and our Constitution by overturning our election from the previous November.
Two months earlier on November 8, WMNF Station Co-founder and News Director, Rob Lorei, (who went door-to-door to help start the station in 1979) was sent an email at the station from a defender of the Proud Boys. Rob criticized support for the group that has been listed by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a hate group. Following the insurrection, the Proud Boys has also had a great many of its members arrested and charged for their planning of and involvement in the violent mob that attacked our nation’s capitol, leading to the deaths of six people, including three Capitol Police Officers. Rob told WMNF General Manager at the time, Rick Fernandes, about the email exchange. Rick laughed and told Rob not to respond to the emailer again. Rob didn’t.
Five months went by. Then on April 9, Rick called Rob into a meeting and told him he was being let go. Rob asked why. Rob was surprised to learn that he was being fired because of that email exchange from five months earlier. Rob asked Rick if he would put this reason for his termination in writing. Rick refused. Rick never put the reason in writing. The Board of Directors never put the reason in writing.
Now, as many of his friends know, Rob is not only a well respected and accomplished news reporter, he is also a humble man. This is why he has not fought his firing to this point, but, we the undersigned, stand with Rob and feel that, not only should he not be fired for defending our United States of America from violent extremists, he should be honored and rewarded for his actions. First and foremost, he should be rehired by WMNF 88.5 FM Community Radio to continue his 40 plus year dedication to reporting the news to our community and supporting WMNF’s Mission committed to “Equality, Peace and Economic Justice.”
If you agree that Rob’s firing for defending our country was anything but “justice”, please join us in signing so that this injustice will be corrected and Rob will be returned to WMNF!
