The Issue

This semester has been especially challenging. Although the plans for in-person learning have remained, the challenges of being a student during the COVID-19 pandemic have been unexpectedly difficult. With students having different course modalities (in-person, online, and hybrid), it is very hard to create a consistent course schedule. Some students may be all on-line, some may be all in-person, but the challenges begin to arise when students are placed in quarantine. Without an alternative learning policy, students placed in an in-person course must put their in-person classes on hold, unless a Zoom is offered by that specific professor. However, there is no policy that professors are required to do this, and several of the classrooms at WKU are not set up for this style of learning. Furthermore, students suffering from COVID-19 are struggling to make up missed work and getting back on track with their learning once they are allowed to resume an in-person modality. This semester has been different, to say the least. We, the students of WKU, recognize the sacrifice and the good-will of our faculty and staff here at WKU but are in support of a P/D/F grading scale to benefit the students of WKU. Students should be allowed to finalize an opt-in request after finals week and final grades are in so it is not penalizing the students if they manage to do better than expected and are happy with their letter grade. As we are still adapting to the "new normal" anything administration can do to support the students of WKU will be worthwhile and promoting the family and community of our University.
