Stop deleting older cards from MTG Arena once they rotate out of Standard
The Issue
Magic: the Gathering players around the globe face a familiar struggle as the upcoming fall set approaches, and that is the rotation of older sets from Standard MTG play. And, while those cards still see play in non-standard formats, many veteran MTG Arena players are still bitter about the complete deletion of the Kaladesh and Amonkhet blocks from MTGA when Standard play last rotated, and worse, a looming fear that this same collection wipe will happen again, and many fan-favorite cards, such as from the Ixalan block, will be deleted forever from the MTGA database.
I speak for myself, and hopefully for many others, when I say that losing all of the investments made on those sets will be crushing, as will the loss of many of my favorite cards, not to mention my investmentof gems and wildcards on older sets. To me, this is negating all incentive to even bother investing money in MTGA, because all the cards I love most are just gonna be deleted after 2 or so years, and even a refund on all of those moot investments is not gonna make me feel better.
However - this does not have to be the case!
Thanks to many of MTGA's card legality qnd deckbuilding filters, as well as the existence of events on MTGA that don't need to be strictly standard (sealed/draft, Singleton, Pauper, Nomir, etc.). There is no need to remove non-standard Magic the Gathering Arena cards from the database anymore.
In fact, leaving older sets like Ixalan in the database (and making it doubly clear that these older cards are not standard legal) will not only alleviate much of the despair of losing those cards, but rather will liberate MTGA to explore non-standard formats, such as EDH, Oathbreaker, and modern play. Suddenly, those older cards that can't normally be used remain something special that are still worth collecting for when you want to play a deck that standard play won't accommodate for.
I encourage everyone who loves MTGA, everyone who would want to be able to keep their non-standard playing cards, and everyone who spent their gold, gems, and cash on MTGA for cards whose days are numbered to sign this petition to convince Wizards of the coast to let us keep out non-standard cards on MTGA, for the benefit of us all.
Thank you.
