Withhold funding from Cornell until there is accountability
The Issue
Sexual violence is a grave issue that demands serious attention and action from all institutions, especially those entrusted with the education and safety of our youth. Unfortunately, recent events at Cornell University raise troubling questions about the university’s commitment to addressing these issues and ensuring accountability.
This cause is incredibly important to me because, like so many others, I am tired of watching institutions make hollow promises about safeguarding students while failing to take decisive action against those mishandling cases of sexual misconduct. Even though I have no direct connection to Cornell—I am neither a student nor an alum—I cannot stand idly by as these issues are swept under the rug.
We are calling upon donors, alumni, corporations, and other financial supporters of Cornell to take a stand by withholding discretionary funding from the university. This should continue until Cornell conducts an independent review of their response to these cases and publicly discloses their findings. Furthermore, any individuals found to be responsible for mishandling these cases should face appropriate consequences.
Our demand for accountability is not just about holding individuals responsible; it's about ensuring that institutions meant to protect us truly prioritize the well-being and safety of their community members over their reputation or financial interests. The integrity of Cornell University, like any institution, hinges on how it responds when something goes terribly wrong.
Without accountability, more individuals may fall victim to an environment that inadequately addresses severe and life-altering incidents like sexual violence. We cannot, in good conscience, continue to support a university that fails to uphold the values and safety it promises to its students and faculty.
