I am a transgender teenager living in New Zealand, and like many others, I am deeply concerned about the implications of the proposed "Definition of Woman and Man" bill. This bill represents a significant threat to the rights and recognition of transgender, non-binary, and intersex individuals across our nation. The thought of our government defining such fundamental identities, with potential erasure of transgender experiences, is both frightening and disheartening.

The bill stands in direct conflict with the Human Rights Act of New Zealand, which is designed to protect all citizens from discrimination and ensure equal rights. By attempting to legislate a strict binary understanding of gender, the proposed legislation would invalidate advances made in gender identity recognition and rights. This not only marginalizes a significant part of our community but also fosters an environment of discrimination and fear. It is essential to note that gender identity is a personal and complex experience. Legislation attempting to impose narrow definitions can not only neglect but actively harm those whose identities do not fit within those confines.

Furthermore, international human rights standards emphasize the importance of recognizing and respecting the diverse realities of gender identity. The unnecessary politicization of our personal identities threatens to set dangerous precedents and derail progress towards greater societal acceptance and understanding.

Globally, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of self-identification and the inclusion of diverse gender experiences in legal and social policy frameworks. Countries spearheading progress in human rights have shown significant benefits of inclusive policies that understand and honour the diverse spectra of gender identity.

We call upon the New Zealand Parliament to withdraw the "Definition of Woman and Man" bill and engage in constructive dialogue with representatives of the affected communities. By involving voices from our communities in policy discussions, we can work towards laws that celebrate diversity, embrace change, and protect the rights of all New Zealanders.
