The Issue

As a dedicated creator in the community of arts, community advocate , formal educator and the founder of the ActOn Academy initiative focused on youth development, I am deeply committed to fostering an environment where future generations can thrive. Our city, Macon, is facing a pivotal moment in its development with the proposed casino project.

This project is being touted as a beacon of economic revitalization; however, the reality may be far less beneficial than promised. Multiple studies have shown that casinos often bring a host of negative socioeconomic impacts. Crime rates tend to spike, local businesses often suffer, and the social costs can be detrimental to our community's well-being. According to research by the Institute for American Values, communities with casinos experience significant negative impacts such as higher rates of bankruptcy, domestic violence, and addiction issues.

Moreover, casinos typically create low-wage, low-skill jobs that do not contribute to the sustainable economic growth that Macon needs. Our city deserves progress that builds people up, not development that risks pulling our community further into hardship.

We have the opportunity to pursue healthier and more sustainable development options that will have long-lasting positive impacts on our community. Investing in education, local entrepreneurship, and new industries can provide higher quality jobs and a more stable economic future.

We respectfully ask the Macon Mayor and City Commission to withdraw their support for the casino proposal and work collaboratively with community leaders and residents to chart a new path forward. By prioritizing developments that uplift and empower our citizens, we can secure a promising future for Macon.

Your voice is vital in building this better future. Please sign this petition to urge our city leaders to make the right choice for our community and generations to come. Let's choose progress that truly benefits all of us.
