As Governor Brown and Governor Newsom have both disclosed, the first American governor of California, Peter Burnett, was a terrible racist. The governors disclosed that Peter Burnett issued a proclamation in 1850 calling for the extermination of all California Indian people. 

In the City of Hawthorne there is a grammar school named for Peter Burnett. We are demanding that the name be changed to honor the great California Native American heroine, Toypurina. She has been called "Joan of Arc of California" for the fact that she is the only Native American woman in American history to lead a revolt.

She was a religious leader, a shaman and a prominent member of the Kizh nation, the local Native American tribe of the greater Los Angeles area (including Hawthorne). 

We believe that Toypurina's name is the ideal replacement for Peter Burnett's as the name of a school for children, so that those children can truly be proud of their institutional moniker.
