Shelter Cats for Wisconsin's Official State Cat

The Issue

We are a group of sixth graders at TRCMS and we are working toward having shelter cats officially adopted as Wisconsin's State Cat. According to the Wisconsin Humane Society, they took in 6,224 cats in 2020. They  adopted out 5,251 and 540 were unhealthy or untreatable and were humanely euthanized. These numbers are down from 2019, when they took in 9,029 cats and 1,116  were euthanized due to health concerns. These numbers are alarming and do not even represent the entire number of shelters and rescues in Wisconsin! We believe by having our state legislature name shelter cats as our official state cat it will bring awareness to this problem and encourage more people to help by adopting, fostering, donating, and spaying or neutering pets. Please sign our petition so that we can submit our proposal to our state lawmakers and help the animals in our communities.
