The Issue
Living in Winston Avenue, residents face the persistent challenges of noise and air pollution, alongside the constant worry of safely exiting their own driveways. These issue is particularly exacerbated on roads adjacent to schools and in residential areas with steep hills, where speeding vehicles pose a significant threat to pedestrians, cyclists, and especially children walking to school
The current speed limit does not sufficiently address these dangers. By reducing the speed limit to 20 mph, we can create a safer environment for everyone. Not only will this reduce the noise and emissions that come from vehicles travelling at higher speeds, but it will also drastically decrease the risk of serious accidents. Studies by organisations such as the World Health Organization and the UK Department for Transport have shown that lowering speed limits can lead to a significant reduction in traffic accidents and fatalities.
Incorporating road calming measures like speed tables and signage would prevent drivers from treating the steep gradient road as a race track. These tables can serve as a proven effective deterrent against speeding while maintaining smooth traffic flow. Other methods to enhance the safety measures parents should feel secure knowing their children are safe walking or cycling to school, and every citizen should benefit by the reduction noise and air pollution that comes with excessive speed. The road experiences a substantial amount of traffic due to the high number of residents in the area and Winston Avenue is a "No through Road" once passed Guest Avenue therefore the is no alternative route for residents to take.
This is an actionable and achievable change that can save lives and enhance the quality of life in Winston Avenue. We urge the local council to take immediate steps to implement a 20 mph speed limit with supportive traffic calming measures in our community.
