Impose a mandatory $500 fine for EVERY person who is caught leaving their pet in a car on a day where the temperature is at or above 23C.

Every year, pet owners are warned of the dangers of leaving their dogs in their cars on hot days and yet, every year, it continues to happen. These are not "responsible pet owners". We are asked to make sure our pets have all of their shots up to date and be licensed or a fine will be incurred but somehow, it's ok for these repeat offenders to continue to place their pet in harms way and not suffer any consequences.

Currently, the procedure one is to follow when finding a dog locked in a car on a scorching day is to try to find the owner. Now, in a shopping mall or on a city street, how long does that take? Are we, as good Samaritans, supposed to run around aimlessly trying to find the owner while the dog continues to suffer? That is just time wasted.

Only if the owner can't be located, are we to call to 911 or Animal Services and even then, fines are hardly ever imposed. Animal cruelty needs to be taken seriously in this country. How do you place value on a life? All life matters.

If you're not aware of just how hot it can get in a vehicle that is sitting in the sun, here are some statistics for you:

23C outside = 47C in your car

25C outside = 50C in your car

27C outside = 58C in your car

32C outside = 61C in your car

34C outside = 63C in your car

There have been videos made of people sitting in hot cars to show what it's like for your pets and the results are very disturbing. To actually see what these animals are experiencing is alarming and heart breaking.

The fine is not unreasonable and extremely easy to avoid.

If it's 23C or higher, leave your dog at home.
