Stop further development in Whiteley

The Issue

Day to day the Residents of Whiteley are subjected to significant congestion, traffic delays, restricted movement, air pollution, and the threat of further developments adding to these concerns.

Road improvements have been promised but not materialised. Works are planned but new developments are proposed and built before road infrastructure has improved.

More and more is being crammed into Whiteley with no consideration for the impact on the people that live here.

Current traffic movements are 48,000 to 50,000 vehicles per day.

This equates to 110% congestion levels at morning rush hour and 131% congestion levels in the evening. These are Hampshire County Council figures.

Whiteley Town Council (WTC) together with some residents objected to the building of Lidl supermarket on Solent Way, yet despite opposition Winchester City Council (WCC) approved the development.

It is now proposed that, what is known as Fulcrum 6, the land opposite Lidl on Solent Way, is developed as a distribution depot site for 2 depots and a further industrial unit. Therefore bringing into Whiteley heavy and large goods vehicles.

No road improvements are planned as part of this development. This development is on the main thoroughfare between the 2 primary schools in Whiteley. Also near to bus stops that collect our children going to secondary school.

Despite the large number of families with children in Whiteley. Children requiring Secondary School are shipped out every day on coaches. Due to the traffic congestion at Whiteley the coaches are often late getting our children to school.  Current congestion is also impacting on our children’s education further development will only impact further.

Further developments are planned

Drive through KFC next to Lidl. KFC want to open to midnight. Permission to build a KFC in Locks Heath was turned down? Will that happen in Whiteley.

Whiteley Phase 3. It is proposed to build a multi storey car park and hotel at Whiteley Shopping Centre. This will not increase parking ratios. This will particularly impact on residents living in Angelica Way.

The Forum want to develop an area of land that runs parallel to Whiteley Way. As you drive into Whiteley you will see a 6 storey budget hotel above the tree line. Alongside this will be a pub / restaurant to serve the hotel. A gym, a nursery, a multi storey car park and further industrial units.

There is a proposal to add overflow parking near to Meadowside Centre, again impacting on residents in Angelica Way who will have a car park on their doorstep. The grass area is regularly used by local residents.

Whiteley currently has The Solent Hotel and The Lodge at the Solent, at Segensworth there is the recently expanded Premier Inn and the Holiday Inn also nearby.

Despite this there are proposals to build 2 more hotels in Whiteley.

Will these benefit residents or will this benefit companies on the Business Park?

There is also the North Whiteley development to consider. Will the access routes out of North Whiteley be built!

Serious debate is now needed with resident consultation before any further development in Whiteley is agreed.

There are approx 2800 homes in Whiteley.

We, the Residents are subject to traffic congestion 7 days a week.

Lip service is paid to our concerns

We need a local plan that looks at the issues that Whiteley residents are suffering.
