Members of the South Winchester Golf Club were notified this week of the sale of the freehold of the site by Crown Golf to Bloor Homes Ltd.
South Winchester Golf Club is subject to a deed of covenant ensuring it remains as a golf club until at least 2026. This prohibits any development of the site until then. It seems that Crown Golf will lease the course back initially for the period of the covenant, which may be extended if the land is not taken forward by Winchester City Council.
Local residents will be very concerned about this latest development following the widespread survey works and the announcement of this sale. A significant development proposal on this site would be considered strategic growth under planning rules and would therefore need to be included in Winchester City Council’s local plan.
Many of you have already sent a strong message to Winchester City Council by responding to their local plan consultation.
Chairman of Hursley Parish Council and Member of the Save South Winchester Campaign Group David Killeen said
"I was very concerned to hear Crown Golf have sold out to Bloor Homes Ltd. The course has been allocated in the Winchester SHELAA (Strategic Housing and Economic Land Availability Allocations) for some years but the timing of this announcement is very worrying. There are many areas suitable for housing already identified without removing this beautiful, amenity space. The Save South Winchester team, supported by 6000 members of the public will keep this under close review and will fight to keep this space open."
