WIN Time Changes - North High School

WIN Time Changes - North High School
The Issue
WIN Time, or What I Need Time, is time that a student can set aside for a specific class or lesson, to get more direct help or study time from a teacher, or small group time to work on projects or help each other with a lesson a student might be struggling with.
While on paper, WIN seems like the perfect program, and it certainly does have is wonderful perks, currently, there are some very serious issues with it. Students, Teachers, and Parents have all likely noticed some glaring problems with the program that could be changed, and this petition is not being made with hope of repealing the program, but to better it. During this summer, and with the help of constructive feedback from Students and Teachers, we hope to open dialogue and create positive change in WIN Time.
The major issue this petition looks to deal with is the scarcity of time. WIN is only on Wednesdays, and Students and Teachers have little to no control over what sessions the Student can take when pinged from multiple teachers. We request the following changes be implemented:
- WIN Time be 3 times per week, at a minimum. Having more sessions allows smaller session sizes as well as more individual 1-on-1 time's with multiple teachers. This would also allow more freedom for Teachers to ping students more effectively. Thirdly, Students would be able to utilize the time more effectively, even scheduling positive time with a group for project work.
- Teachers no longer be required to ping 10 students per WIN Session. We understand wanting to promote the use and facilitate participation in WIN Time. It's a great program, when session sizes are small. However, requiring a minimum of 10 pings has led to either larger WIN Sessions, or students being pinged by multiple teachers. Lowering this requirement, or removing it altogether would give the Teachers more freedom to properly design WIN Sessions to benefit the most students.
- Student Groups, i.e. Group Projects or Study Groups, could be established with Teacher Approval and be able to communicate or ping each other to work on a group assignment or to share notes and help each other study. Currently, it is difficult to use WIN for group work, but this could be an amazing application, especially if the amount of days WIN sessions are held is increased.
If you agree with 1 or more of these changes, please sign this petition and lets get some movement going to turn WIN Time into the great assistance program we all know it can be!
For more information on WIN Time, a detailed letter of Overview and Issues I wrote can be read here on Google Docs.
Feel free to leave feedback and let us know what you think would make WIN Time better so we can all take part in helping our school become better for our future, and for those to come.
