Implement Education about Racism into the Be Nice Program

Implement Education about Racism into the Be Nice Program
Why this petition matters
Williamson County Schools has a program called “Be Nice,” where they teach the students about bullying, how to deal with it and how not to be a bully. This is great, however, they completely skip over racism. Racism is bullying. Not teaching kids that racism is bullying enables them to be racist and allows them to create excuses for it. The goal of this petition is to implement education about racism into the Be Nice Program.
This education will teach the students what racism looks like, whether it’s indirect or direct. It will teach kids how to properly respond to racism and how to discourage racist bullies. It will address racist questions, comments and actions that kids might not realize are offensive. Educating the students of Williamson County about racism from a young age will help to prevent bullying throughout middle and high school.
This is very important because many people experience racism throughout their middle and high school careers here in Williamson County. Many students have reported that when they go to teachers about their bullies, the bullies are told to apologize and nothing else is done. Racism is bullying, and it needs to have the same repercussions that bullying does. Unfortunately, it doesn’t. So, the next best thing we can do is educate students on how not to be racist to prevent this bullying from ever happening.
