On Monday, the Williamson County Commission, by a vote of 16-7, approved the resolution to accept the task force's recommendation to remove the Confederate battle flag from the county seal. The resolution creates the next step in the process for the county to apply for a waiver from the TN Historical Commission to make this change.
Commissioner Hudson, who voted in favor of the resolution said, "It’s disheartening that we would even contemplate on saving a symbol that is a universal hate symbol. Now, I agree that there may be a portion of heritage - but you can’t deny in this diverse county that this is a symbol of universal hate."
The TN Historical Commission has to approve the request for a waiver by a two-thirds majority (the timeline is TBD), and then the Williamson County Commission will determine the final steps for the seal - simply remove the flag, redesign the quadrant with the Confederate battle flag in it, or permanently retire the seal.
