Dear Neighbors and Community Members,
Thank you all for your continued interest, advocacy, and support regarding San Jose Unified School District’s Schools of Tomorrow initiative, which initially proposed closing nine San Jose Elementary Schools, including two of the four Almaden Valley elementary schools.
After numerous meetings and many hours of deliberation, on Tuesday, March 10th, the members of the Schools of Tomorrow Implementation Committee (STIC) presented their final recommendation. While the proposal recommends closing and displacing 5 schools across the district’s 27 elementary schools, the committee decided to remove some larger schools from the closure list including Simonds and Williams Elementary.
That said, this is not the final step. The proposal now moves to the SJUSD Board of Trustees, who will vote to accept, reject, or modify the recommendation with a 3/5 majority vote on March 26th. In the coming weeks, we will continue to show up and stay engaged.
Key Upcoming Meetings:
CRITICAL TO ATTEND: March 21 at 9:00 AM: Board Study Session to discuss STIC’s final recommendations. In our community WhatsApp group, we will be posting sign-up sheets for time blocks that people can attend. We need to ensure Almaden is represented throughout the day. You can also submit public comments to help protect our Almaden schools.
CRITICAL TO ATTEND: March 26 at 6:00 PM: Board of Trustees final vote
We encourage everyone to remain involved in this important process:
Attend the March 21st and 26th meetings in person to demonstrate community support — showing up matters.
