William & Mary: Revoke Matt Gaetz's Law Degree!

William & Mary: Revoke Matt Gaetz's Law Degree!
The Issue
William & Mary Law School prides itself on producing "citizen lawyers" who "lead in their communities, motivated by the desire for progress and by the knowledge that members of the legal profession have a special responsibility that comes with their degrees." The values of a citizen lawyer, as declared by the school, include "leadership, insight, inclusion, community, and progress."
However, one of the most infamous alumni of the school, former Florida congressional representative and proposed U.S. Attorney General Matt Gaetz, represents none of these ideals. While his alleged criminality was perhaps not evident during his years in law school, Gaetz's bigotry, small-mindedness, and lack of moral character absolutely were. During his time at W&M Law School, for example, Gaetz championed the Marshall-Newman Amendment that would enshrine anti-gay discrimination in the Virginia state constitution.
We, the undersigned, as fellow alumni of the College of William & Mary, hereby call upon the Dean of William & Mary Law School, A. Benjamin Spencer, and the President of the College of William & Mary, Katherine A. Rowe, to take the following actions:
- Revoke the Juris Doctorate degree awarded to Matt Gaetz.
- Issue a formal declaration of condemnation of Matt Gaetz's conduct and many failures to live up to the ideals of a "citizen lawyer."
- Review all policies and procedures regarding student acceptances and student conduct; university-wide and law school-specific diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-harassment initiatives; and other related areas to ensure that the College of William & Mary no longer tolerates community members such as Gaetz.
Further, we, the undersigned, as fellow alumni of the College of William & Mary, commit to withholding all financial and other support from the university until university leadership has met the above demands.
