Stand Up for British Manufacturing Jobs !

Colchester is shocked at the recent announcement by MAN Europe Ltd proposing closure of the Paxmans Colchester works site. If carried through this means the loss of up to 80 jobs, ending 155 years of Paxmans proud involvement in our town.  Click HERE for the Colchester Gazette report 16th July.

Residents and staff are incredulous that orders for the VP185, the flagship engine of the Hythe site, are allegedly no longer needed.  This is a reliable and world renowned engine, used by the British Navy and commissioned by maritime and rail companies around the world.

Management at MAN Europe Ltd say the company plans to concentrate its UK operation in Stockport. However, Stockport site does not manufacture the VP185 engine; it is an office and stores facility. The skills for manufacture are in Colchester, with a workforce that is committed to production and fulfilling orders with a long and proud history. Because the valuable expertise of this workhorse engine is here in Colchester, we believe that is where it should stay.

Colchester Labour councillors are working with union representatives to progress talks between management and workforce that are constructive and transparent. We asked the Shadow Defence Secretary, John Healey MP, to lobby Ben Wallace MP, Defence Secretary on the details of the proposed closure, you can see the letter HERE.  A reply will be made public when it is received.

Speak to anyone involved in this industry and you will find confidence and pride in the design, development and manufacture of diesel engines at Paxmans. Innovation in providing an Electronic Fuel Injection option arrived in 2012 and order books were well supplied for the maritime industry.  Hundreds of local people have been involved with the Paxmans community during those 155 years - through apprenticeships, stores, production, clerical, design and research & development.  This Paxmans bond is incredibly strong and memories down the generations are still shared.

Please sign the petition and ask the MP for Colchester, Will Quince to stand up for British manufacturing and protect our local jobs.  We are losing all our industrial heritage in Colchester, soon we will be reduced to remembering our engineering and manufacturing pride through road names only!
