The Issue

Columbia (Maury County), Tennessee is a jewel located in picturesque Middle Tennessee.  It is a dynamic community on the cusp of economic prosperity and diversity.

Unfortunately, Columbia is also the largest city in Tennessee which still hosts three days of “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty at its public Maury County Park.  Consequently,  Columbia is "ground zero" in the fight to END the “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty to Tennessee Walking Horses.

On July 25, 2019,  the members of the United States House of Representatives delivered “America’s Verdict” in an overwhelming  bi-partisan landslide (78%) floor vote of  - 333 to 96 - to abolish the “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty forever by removing the torture devices – nearly EIGHT POUND STACK shoes and CHAINS from Tennessee Walking Horses.

And this shocking video  - "Here's What Soring Does To Horses" -  opening scene was taken at the 2016 Columbia Spring Jubilee Horse Show. It  features a “BABY HORSE” - Two Year Old “Big Lick” Tennessee Walking Horse ridden with approximately EIGHT POUND shoes,  and with CHAINS on the sensitive skin above its front hooves.

The video has now been viewed almost 17 MILLION times since being released on March 7, 2017.

CCABLAC animal welfare advocates have protested the Columbia “Big Lick” Horse Show nofor the past six years,  beginning in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020.   And 2021 will be the seventh year.  To their credit,  local citizens have BOYCOTTED the Animal Cruelty featured at the Columbia “Big Lick” Horse Show.

This “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty has brought scandal and shame to Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee.

CRIMINAL ACTS OF VIOLENCE

*    2015  -  A “Big Lick” Tennessee Walking Horse Trainer committed a violent crime by driving a large dually truck pulling a trailer loaded with horses at a lady on the side of the road who was protesting against “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty.  The “Big Lick”horse trainer,  Mr. Jamie B. Lawrence,  was convicted of Assault by a Maury County Jury in February 2016.   As a result,  Columbia owned the stigma of lawlessness,  and the Animal Cruelty associated with the “Big Lick”.

*  2018 – A “Big Lick” Exhibitor drove a car dangerously close to CCABLAC Advocates exercising their First Amendment rights.  A federal lawsuit was brought against this individual in U. S. District Court in Nashville, TN.

ALLEGED VIOLATIONS OF FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS - MAURY COUNTY SHERIFF UNDER SUPERVISION OF U. S. DISTRICT COURT IN NASHVILLE

*   2016 –  Maury County Sheriff Bucky Rowland told CCABLAC animal welfare advocates associated with the www.billygoboy.com website publication at the horse show being held in the public Maury County Park – “TURN OFF YOUR VIDEO RECORDERS” while they were making videos.   Suit was filed in U. S. District Court in Nashville,  and Sheriff Bucky Rowland spent the next two years under the supervision of the federal court.

TAKE “BIG LICK” PICTURE DOWN FROM CITY HALL WALL

Hanging a picture of a “Big Lick” Tennessee Walking Horse on the City Hall wall placed the City of Columbia, Tennessee in the center of an ongoing national Animal Cruelty controversy surrounding Tennessee’s State Horse, and placed in jeopardy its "Top Ten Best Small Town In America" designation by Southern Living Magazine.   The "Big Lick" gait is viewed by “Big Lick” supporters as a “Tennessee Tradition”,  while the rest of the country and the world sees it as Animal Cruelty.

After the resulting public outrage,   the “Big Lick” picture was removed from the City Hall wall as reported on October 3, 2019 by the Columbia Daily Herald newspaper.
