Amanda Roberts started this petition to David Molyneux (Executive Leader of Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council)

According to the Commons Library debate pack on the UK bee population in 2017 it is thought that the loss of flower-rich habitat is one of the biggest sources of pollinator decline in England.

The House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee published a strategy to support bee populations in July 2014 which was well received among environmental stakeholders. One of the strategy’s key themes was to support pollinators across towns, cities and the countryside as loss of habitat has been identified as a likely main cause of pollinator decline. Thus key actions focussed on expanding food, shelter and nest sites.

It has recently been documented in the national press that councils across Great Britain are saving tens of thousands of pounds by cutting less and later alongside motorways and A roads so pollinators can work their magic and seeds can ripen and fall to the ground.

If Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council were to adopt this policy they could free up both the funds and employees to invest in tree planting as a means to combat climate change. This is a particularly urgent issue across the North of England where we have below average woodland cover and would value from renewed investment in community forests or even community orchards to support the homeless or those on low income.
