The Issue

Living on Poplar Tent Road in Concord, NC has opened my eyes to a daily reality that begs for change. I witness the chaos of traffic congestion and the alarming number of wrecks almost every day. The stretch between Highway 29 and Highway 73 is not just a roadway; it's a dangerous road that puts countless lives at risk.

The current two-lane roads and road quality is insufficient for the volume of traffic it handles, leading to frequent accidents and delays. These incidents not only threaten the safety of the commuters but also cause significant stress to those of us who live and work in the area. Increasing the capacity of Poplar Tent Road by widening it to four lanes will greatly alleviate congestion and enhance safety for everyone.

This proposal is not without precedent. Many similar roads in developing suburban areas have undergone widening projects, which have proven successful in enhancing traffic flow and reducing accidents, but Popular Tent remains neglected and at the bottom of NCDOT’s priority list. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, widening roads in congested areas can lead to a reduction in accident rates by as much as 30%. Our community deserves this change for a safer and more efficient daily commute.

We ask the county to initiate a project to widen Poplar Tent Road to four lanes, a step that would significantly improve the quality of life for all Concord residents. It's time to act to prevent further accidents and ensure a safer commute.

Please sign this petition to urge local authorities to take immediate action on this critical safety and infrastructure issue. Together, we can make Poplar Tent Road safer and easier to travel for everyone.

Note from Change.org: A supporter of the petition reached out to Mayor Dusch via email. Here is his response: I could not agree more. This is an NCDOT project that has continued to be delayed. I would suggest you contact you State Representatives and State Senators to help push this along. Thank you, Bill
