Aoife O Driscoll started this petition to Wicklow County Council and

Magheramore Beach is one of Ireland's finest beaches and a much loved amenity for locals and visitors to County Wicklow.

Future access to Magheramore beach is now in question as the lands surrounding it are due to go to auction on 25th June. With the public pathway and the access route to Magheramore Beach now up for auction, continued access to the beach could be in jeopardy. The generations of people who have enjoyed the beach may no longer be able to access it. If this beach is close to your heart and you believe Ireland's beauty spots should be freely available for the public to visit, please help me to lobby our politicians and Wicklow County Council to stop the sale taking place.

What makes Magheramore Beach so special? This beautiful cove is popular with surfers and considered the best location for surfing on Ireland's east coast. It provides a fantastic setting for sea swimming and has been the location for the annual “Dip in the Nip”, when swimmers take the plunge to raise funds for cancer research. The beach has been the setting for many TV productions including historical dramas such as Vikings and Camelot, the EastEnders spin-off series Redwater, and Amy Huberman’s Finding Joy.

The glamour of movies aside, to most people Magheramore Beach is a place where they can enjoy Ireland's scenery and coastline at its best. It is a place to come for quiet time and a solo walk or to be with family and friends. It's a chance to soak up a sunny Irish day with a picnic, walk the golden sands, explore the inlets for shells and head home afterwards with new memories. I came here as a child and bring my own children today. I would be so sad to no longer be able to visit and I know many people feel as I do.

With the rise of sea swimming and outdoor activities, we need our beaches more than ever. I am calling on Wicklow County Council and the TDs of Wicklow to step in and prevent the sale of this property. I am urging them to purchase the land and give the ownership of it to the Irish people. This beach needs support - a car-park to prevent the unsafe parking that currently takes place on the surrounding roads, litter facilities and public toilets. We elect our TD's to represent us and the issues important to us. This is a very important issue to the people of Wicklow, Ireland and visitors from beyond our shores.

Please sign this petition and call on Wicklow County Council to buy the land and ensure Magheramore Beach can be accessed and enjoyed by all for generations to come.

Thank you,

Aoife O'Driscoll
