Why It’s Time for Michigan to Join the RN Compact States : Support Bill 4246
The Issue
To: Michigan State Senate Regulatory Affairs Committee, State Legislators, Healthcare Leaders, and the General Public
We, the undersigned nurses, healthcare professionals, students, and concerned citizens, strongly urge the Michigan State Senate and its Regulatory Affairs Committee to pass House Bill 4246, a critical piece of legislation that would officially bring Michigan into the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC).
This initiative will enable Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses (LPNs/VNs) to practice in other NLC member states without requiring additional licensure, while maintaining Michigan’s high standards for nursing practice and patient safety.
Why This Matters for Michigan:
Workforce Mobility: Michigan nurses will be able to seamlessly work in other compact states, making it easier to fill staffing shortages and respond to crises such as public health emergencies and natural disasters.
Recruitment and Retention: Joining the NLC will make Michigan more competitive in recruiting top talent by allowing out-of-state nurses to work here without licensing delays.
Access to Care: NLC participation helps expand telehealth services, particularly in underserved and rural communities, improving access to timely and quality care.
Economic Opportunity: Nurses can take travel assignments or relocate with their families without bureaucratic hurdles, enhancing job flexibility and career satisfaction.
National Alignment: As of 2025, 41 states and jurisdictions have already joined the NLC. Michigan must act now to avoid being left behind.
Support for House Bill 4246:
House Bill 4246 has already passed in the Michigan House of Representatives with immediate effect and is currently awaiting consideration by the Senate Regulatory Affairs Committee. It is sponsored by a dedicated group of legislators who recognize the urgency and necessity of modernizing Michigan’s approach to nurse licensure.
Now it’s time for the Senate to act.
We call on:
✅ Michigan State Senators to vote YES on HB 4246.
✅ Nurses and healthcare professionals to speak out in support of the compact.
✅ Hospitals, health systems, and nursing schools to advocate for swift passage.
✅ Community members to raise awareness of how this bill improves healthcare access across Michigan.
Let’s stand together for mobility, flexibility, and access to quality care.
