When more than 700 people signed our petition, the issue we raised was simple:
Ryan lost his rights under adult guardianship.
At the time, many people asked why this mattered so much.
The answer is now painfully clear.
Because Ryan lost his rights, he also lost access to his own medical care.
For 18 months, Ryan was suffering from severe gastrointestinal disease associated with Prader-Willi syndrome. During that time he experienced:
• chronic constipation
• severe acid reflux (GERD)
• rectal digging caused by intestinal pain
• inability to eat solid food
• extreme weight loss
Despite these obvious warning signs, Ryan was not allowed to see a gastroenterologist.
His symptoms were dismissed as “anxiety.”
The person caring for him daily was not allowed to seek medical help.
Ryan eventually reached a critical medical crisis.
He was hospitalized and remained in hospital for six months while a gastroenterologist treated serious gastrointestinal disease.
Medical reports later confirmed the exact conditions that had been repeatedly raised as concerns.
The question supporters must now ask is not just what happened to Ryan.
The question is:
How could a vulnerable adult suffer for 18 months without access to a specialist while under a legal guardianship system designed to protect him?
This is why systemic abuse is so difficult to expose.
Institutions can rely on plausible denial:
• professionals say they were “providing support”
• decisions are hidden inside guardianship authority
• the person suffering has no voice
• the family raising concerns is restricted or silenced
When the truth finally emerges, the vulnerable person is often removed from public view and the system moves on.
Ryan deserves better.
And if this can happen to Ryan, it can happen to others.
It is time for transparency.
It is time for accountability.
It is time to demand a public inquiry into how vulnerable adults are protected under guardianship in Saskatchewan.
The 700 people who signed the petition understood something was wrong.
Now you deserve to know the full story.
