Why do EU Residents Have No Say in the Country They Call Home
Why do EU Residents Have No Say in the Country They Call Home
The Issue
Currently, as an EU citizen residing in the Netherlands for work or studies, you are not allowed to vote in the National Elections (Tweede Kamerverkiezingen). In hindsight, this feels deeply unfair.
When you live here, you aren't just a visitor; you are a part of the economy that runs this country. You pay the exact same taxes as your Dutch neighbors, you follow the same Dutch laws, and you contribute to the economy every single day. The regulations and rules behind these vital topics, from the cost of your health insurance to the rights you have as a renter, are decided on by the Tweede Kamer.
It raises a simple, frustrating question: If my life is shaped by these decisions just as much as a Dutch citizen’s life is, why am I not allowed to vote for change?
It feels wrong that as an EU citizen, I can freely move, work, and build a life here, yet I am politically silenced in the country I call home. I am expected to fulfill all the duties of a resident, but I am denied the most basic right: a voice in the matter of shaping my life here.
