Make it mandatory to donate day old food to the homeless, Whole Foods!
The Issue
We, California people, and people from all over the world, ask Whole Foods to start donating day old food to the homeless in the surrounding areas of each store.
Overall, 58 percent of the nation's unsheltered homeless youth resides in California.
40% of food produced in the U.S. goes uneaten, costing the American economy $218 billion per year, or 1.3% of GDP.
Nearly 50 million Americans, including 16 million children, are food insecure; reducing food waste by just 15% could feed 25 million people every year.
Whole Food Markets with Home Office Headquarters in Texas is the 59th World’s Largest U.S.-Based Grocery and Supermarket Chains 2018. They have 88 stores in California according the to Whole Foods website.
While Whole Foods market provides anecdotal evidence of its food waste reduction efforts in select stores, it has yet to report on its food waste management strategy or disclose current, company-wide data on food waste prevention or diversion.
Many non-governmental organizations are working to raise awareness of the impacts of food waste that may lead to negative media attention for retailers like Whole Foods.
Make it mandatory for Whole Foods to donate their day old food that is usually put into the trash, to homeless and poor families in homeless shelters and food banks.
The waste is unbelievable especially when people can't afford food.
Starbucks announced in 2016 that they would be donating 100 percent of their unsold food to charity. By 2021, they say, they'll have given away 50 million free meals.
In fact, for some time now, Panera Bread has an extensive program that they called Day-End Dough-Nation , in which it donates perfectly good but not fresh food to soup kitchens, shelters and so on.
France, in 2016, create a food waste ban where there will be a fine if you throw away food that is edible or usable for animal fee. Parliamentarian Guillaume Garot wrote the law. He believes the fight against food waste should be as important as other national causes, like wearing seatbelts.
We are asking one of America’s largest food retailers, Whole Foods, and specifically John Mackey CEO, to do something simple, economically efficient, and good for the retailers’ and Californians bottom line.
