The Issue

Over 10 days last April, 21 dogs left Indianapolis Animal Care Services (IACS) with a single home-based rescue in DeKalb County. Months later, what happened to most of them still hasn’t been made public. Court records show the shelter has paperwork for only four.

The woman who ran that rescue is charged with felony animal torture and fraud in the death of one of those dogs, a dog named Motley. Donors had pledged $925 to save him. Records show he died and was taken for cremation the same day he left the shelter. She has pleaded not guilty. She told police that a mother dog and her puppies went to a rescue in Michigan, but investigators say she never provided proof.

That leaves the volunteers and donors who raised money to keep these dogs alive with no answers about the rest. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation is still open, and more people have been calling in with information since the charges became public.

Every one of these dogs deserves to be found. IACS, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and the DeKalb County Prosecutor’s Office should work together to trace each of the 21 dogs. They should share what they learn as soon as it won’t harm the case, and tell donors what became of the animals they paid to save. IACS should also release the transfer records it already has.

Behind each number is a dog someone tried to save. Sign the petition to demand answers for all 21 dogs before the trail goes cold.
