Attention provincial media outlets:

(StarPhoenix​, Leader-Post, & CBC-Saskatchewan):

Currently Saskatchewan residents have no official outlet or forum to voice their community concerns in writing and on record about the issues of the day.

The StarPhoenix and the Leader-Post no longer support a letters to the editor section, and infrequently publish local op-eds anymore, in print or online.  As well, the papers no longer employ local staff columnists who once provided informed analysis of local and provincial issues. 
 
The CBC-Sask leans more to the first person lived experience pieces which are interesting and often moving; however, without spaces to voice informed and diverse community viewpoints, our democracy is impoverished. 

The stark reality is that Saskatchewan is bereft of any such spaces where its citizens may publicly share their views, insights, and knowledge in a curated, fact-checked fashion. 

As we have witnessed over the last few years, democracy is fragile and requires the robust contributions of each of its pillars, whether the free press, the judiciary, the legislature, or the academy.  The press carries a unique and critical responsibility in keeping governments and politicians in check while bearing witness to the voices of our citizens.

With this in mind, we the undersigned demand that Postmedia, as a recipient of public funding, restore these vital sections of their Saskatchewan newspapers. Time to reinstate the letters to the editor & local op-eds as a daily feature of the Leader-Post and StarPhoenix with the proper staff to run it.

Additionally, we ask CBC-Saskatchewan, for their part, to consider expanding the scope of their opinion coverage.
