The image you see is not from a movie—it is Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan, where the parliament chairman was physically surrounded and blocked by ruling party lawmakers, preventing him from presiding over a session. The chairman’s seat was forcibly occupied, and the meeting was shut down. This political involvement reflects a concerning departure from parliamentary procedure and democratic norms.
In a separate courtroom development, Ko Wen-je revealed that a prosecutor had threatened him with a so-called personal material. Ko clearly stated that he has no personal videos or photos, and emphasized that any personal-related content is irrelevant to the subject case.
Rather than investigating the prosecutor’s conduct, the system responded by allowing the prosecutor to request a formal investigation into the material itself, a move seen as an attempt to justify the threat instead of addressing misconduct.
These incidents—physical obstruction of the legislature and prosecutorial intimidation in the courtroom—reflect a disturbing pattern in which democratic norms are suppressed and institutions manipulated to silence opposition and concentrate power.
Taiwan lacks an independent oversight mechanism for prosecutorial misconduct, and the legislative process itself is now facing aggressive disruption by those in power, particularly members aligned with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)—threatening the institutional balance and undermining the rule of law.
After 7 months of pre-trial detention with no solid evidence presented, the Taipei District Court is scheduled to rule by April 1 whether to further extend the detention of Ko Wen-je and three other defendants, all of whom have pleaded not guilty.
This is not just a political case—it is a warning sign that democratic backsliding and unchecked power are putting Taiwan’s core values and institutions at risk under Lai Ching-Te’s administration.
