In the United States- the democracy President Lai claims to cherish- no government official, including the Minister of Justice, has the authority to declare a detainee “healthy” or “recovering well.” That determination belongs solely to licensed medical professionals — those independent and trusted by the family. In contrast, during pre-trial detention — before any conviction and while still presumed innocent under law — Ko Wen-je has been subjected to prolonged confinement based on disproven and fabricated reasons. His health has steadily declined, with symptoms including severe back pain, blood in urine, vomiting, and kidney-related issues. Despite this, only basic care and simple check up were provided. After his attorney requested medical bail, the Ministry of Justice issued a formal letter claiming Ko was “recovering well” — without any thorough or independent medical assessment. This action violates medical ethics, human rights, legal boundaries, and the foundational values of any society that calls itself free and democratic.
