On October 7th, 2025, a tragic and senseless act of violence claimed the life of my beloved nephew, Mason Steve Caballero, while he was innocently riding in a friend's car. The car was ambushed near an elementary and junior high school, and, in a harrowing moment, 22 rounds were fired as an act of gang retaliation against the driver who sought to leave his gang ties behind. Just 16 years old, Mason's life was cut short, a victim of this ruthless cycle of violence.

The suspects, alarmingly, are teenagers themselves, aged 16 and 15. This incident serves not only as a grim reminder of the dangerous intersections between youth and gang violence but also as an urgent call for our community to unite against these acts that threaten the safety and hope within our neighborhoods. It's crucial we act to ensure those responsible face justice and that preventative measures are taken to protect our children from similar acts of violence.
