Petition updateCreate a walking and cycling greenway on the closed railway from Sligo to AthenryError in email sent yesterday re Galway councillors
Western Rail Trail
Jul 24, 2018
I sent an email out yesterday listing the councillors who had voted against a feasibility study into the Galway Western Rail Trail section from Athenry to Milltown last September.
I made an error in the list and mistakenly included Cllr Michael Finnerty email address as one of the councillors in the list. This was incorrect. Cllr Michael Finnerty in fact voted in favour of the Greenway Feasibility study last September and deserves our full support as a Greenway supporter. A full apology has been sent to Cllr Michael Finnerty and I have spoken to him and he said not to worry but no more emails please to him!.
There are two councillors who share the same family name, this is how the error occurred. If you are going to send an email to Galway councillors on this issue then please use this revised list which of course excludes Cllr Michael Finnerty. Apologies again to Michael.
The councillors who blocked the Feasibility study are listed below,(this is the same list as yesterday excluding Michael!)

Dear Councillor: I note that last September you voted to stop any chance of a feasibility study on the closed railway from Athenry to Milltown to become a Greenway. Apparently you did this pending an outcome of a report which is supposed to be produced on what is going to happen with the closed railway. This report has still not been produced and it is looking unlikely it will ever appear; all the signs are that the railway is not going to be re-opened for a whole host of reasons.
In the meantime the Department of Transport has issued a call for Greenway funding with a pot of €50 million available for funding strategically long greenways that will fit into the National Greenway Network.
The Western Rail Trail from Athenry to Sligo is a perfect opportunity to create a national greenway route as part of the national greenway network. However this can only happen with the support of Galway Mayo and Sligo County Council, Sligo County Council is fully supportive.
Imagine a greenway from Athenry to Sligo and what it could do for the West of Ireland economy. I am writing to ask you to reconsider your position, to finally accept the inevitable about this route and to come on board like so many other councillors to support the Western Rail Trail and to get Galway county council to enter the call for funding,
If the west turns its back on this funding the likelihood is the majority of the funding will go to projects in the South East of Ireland to link up the Barrow Blueway, the Waterford Greenway to be extended to Wexford and for this south east greenway network to be connected to Dublin.
We cannot complain in the West if we don’t put our hands up when funding becomes available. Please support the Western Rail Trail.
Thank you.
Sincerely
