Animals are voiceless victims. They are abused and neglected on a day to day basis. The Llama Bar in Subiaco WA and the Akuna Club via Facebook are providing a petting zoo on a weekly basis for club patrons complete with bbq and discount drinks. This is a terrifying combination. Small animals at the mercy of nightclub goers many of whom will be intoxicated before they even arrive. The consequences for many of these animals will be catastrophic. Please help us get the word to all relevant authorities that this is not acceptable.
The Akuna club has since released a statement that the event was held without the authority of the Llama Bar management, that this was a one off event and the animals penned outside. This does not alter the fact that patrons to the club had access to the animals at a time when they were consuming alcohol and, according to unconfirmed sources, other judgement impairing substances. Animals do not belong at an event where alcohol is being served especially when it is being served at a discount to encourage patrons to drink more. Exposure to patrons inside or outside the club does not reduce the risk to the animals nor does it prtect them from the likelyhood of alcohol fuelled fights between patrons, poor judgement or disregard for proper handling by people who have been consuming alcohol. An attendant only needs to distracted for few seconds for an animal to be injured or killed. This has happened in petting zoos in supposedly controlled environments during the day and with children, add alcohol and it's a recipe for disaster. Photo's of rabbits and guinea pigs being held aloft and looking terrified have not been included in many of the news reports.
