Westerly Surfing Club started this petition to Westerly Town Council and

We are requesting the signatures and support of all who desire to use the beach and the ocean, not just residents of Westerly or Rhode Island. Thank you.

The Issue:

Access to the beach and ocean has been wrongly denied to members of the public at Fenway Beach (and other beaches) in Westerly for decades. This is not just limited to access to the beach, but also at times to the ocean itself for recreational purposes such as surfing and paddleboarding.

We, the undersigned, are requesting that the Weekapaug Fire District be prevented by the Town Of Westerly, The State of Rhode Island and the CRMC from denying the public access to the ocean to surf between the hours of 10am and 6pm at Fenway Beach as they have done for decades. In addition, we request that the Fire District upholds the State Constitution allowing all members of the public access to enjoy the ocean at all times.

Fenway is the most popular and safest beginner surf spot in Westerly and has been enjoyed by families (residents and non) for decades (before 10am and after 6pm in the summer). It is time that this local asset to the community be enjoyed by all residents at all hours of the day. The growing sport of surfing is an integral part of our small town and supports a micro economy that is important to the rebirth of Westerly and its oncoming community and economic renaissance. The surf break and access to it are directly related to the success of many local businesses; a surf school, multiple surf shops, surfboard shapers, etc. Fenway needs to be designated as a safe place where residents and visitors can come to enjoy surfing at all times. A small group of mostly seasonal residents are sadly preventing year-round residents and visitors from enjoying a natural jewel in our community.

The Solution, as requested:

- Allow surfing in a designated area of Fenway Beach at ALL TIMES on ALL DAYS. This surfing section will be the western half, closest to the jetty. The eastern half of the water should be designated for swimming and boogie boarding only, thus keeping swimmers out of harm's way from rogue surfboards. The designation can be clear with placement of a buoy line, or a single offshore buoy.

- Allowing access to the ocean to all, at all times.

Thank you for your support and help in making our town a more inclusive and welcoming place.
