The Issue

What is Disc Golf?

It’s an accessible, affordable and super fun sport that’s exploding in popularity around the world.

It’s just like “ball golf” but with discs (essentially specialized “Frisbees”), and instead of holes there are chain baskets to throw the discs into. Discs can be easily purchased at local sporting goods stores, or online, and are extremely affordable at just over $10 each.

People of any age, size, shape or ability can quickly and cheaply play a round in their spare time. Disc Golf is an awesome way to engage our entire community in a fun, healthy activity while enjoying our counties beautiful park land, with minimal impact to the environment.

Why Westchester?

We are blessed to have a bunch of fabulous & spacious parks and reserves nearby, and yet we currently have only TWO disc golf courses - both nestled in the far northern reaches of the county and none of which currently within a county park. This means thousands of Westchester residents have to drive at least 30 minutes to find a nearby course to play, and that’s not cool, for lots of reasons - more cars on the road, more pollution in the air, etc.

In fact, the New York City Metro area has the least number of disc golf courses of any large metro area in the US. So let’s help make Westchester more Disc Golf friendly! Let’s get some more courses installed, pronto!

What is the Investment?

Disc Golf courses are very affordable to design, install and maintain vs playgrounds, basketball/tennis courts, skateparks, etc. Parks Departments across the country love Disc Golf courses as an affordable & effective community recreational project to give back to the residents.

What is the Impact?

Disc golf is extremely “park-friendly” because it can easily be designed to work within the individual park’s topography. Low-impact, and very environmentally friendly.

Courses can be quietly nestled into the woods, out of sight, respecting the natural flow and order of the geography. They can also utilize unused and unique spaces, taking into account the natural contours of the landscape. One of the prime features of disc golf courses design is its ability to use terrain that is otherwise inaccessible to general park goers and opens up entire swathes of beautiful land to the residents

“Plays Well With Others”

Hikers, dog walkers, mountain bikers, geocachers…they all intermingle nicely with a well-designed disc golf course. Our parks are big and beautiful, and playing together, outdoors, is a great thing for our community. The majority of disc golf courses across the nation co-exist with multi-use parks, and provide additional benefits to the communities as a low cost and  low barrier to entry.

Promotes Park Appreciation

Disc Golfers are famous for being “friends of the parks”, cleaning up trash as they play, helping care for the trees and trails, and working closely with the Parks Department to ensure our land is clean and protected.

Disc Golfers also provide a positive physical presence in remote areas of the park, increasing overall park safety while discouraging vandalism and other nefarious elements.
