In recent days Chick-Fil-A president, Daniel Cathy, has reiterated his opposition to same-sex marriage. Chick-Fil-A has long opposed marriage equality and has donated millions to support the discrimination of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community ( $1 million between 2003 - 2008, $1.7 million in 2009, $2 million in 2010).
WVU has long supported LGBT rights and equality. WVU instituted the Safe Zone program which states, "West Virginia University is ... committed to developing and sustaining a campus community which feels safe and celebratory for all its members. Safe Zone is a tangible way to demonstrate that all sexual orientations and gender presentations are part of our culture and are acknowledged and supported."
The Strategic Plan to Achieve Social Justice at West Virginia University states:
The principle of social justice encompasses the legal and moral obligations to promote opportunity, equality, civility, and respect for all people...
...West Virginia University will address contemporary issues, including violence, hatred, bigotry, prejudice, equity, rage, discrimination, harassment, and any barrier that interferes with learning, creates an undesirable work environment, or diminishes the worth of any individual. This will be achieved through education and empowerment of individuals and groups regarding issues of diversity and respect for each other’s differences, while preserving legitimate rights of free speech in a democratic society."
Chick-Fil-A's presence on WVU's campus creates an uncomfortable atmosphere for hundreds of LGBT WVU students. Their company values can create an uncomfortable work atmosphere and their active discrimination against marriage equality certainly diminishes the worth of LGBT WVU students.
This petition calls for West Virginia University officials to uphold the values of our university, to show support of the LGBT students, faculty, staff, and alumni and to remove Chick-Fil-A from campus until their policies are no longer in direct opposition to WVU's strategic plan to achieve social justice.
